Where does the money go?

The revenue generated from the sale of donated items in Goodwill ‘s retail stores remains in our community to assist people who are working to improve their lives through gainful employment. Goodwill of Central Arizona has been providing services in the community since 1947. Our commitment is to “Put People to Work.”

Do your stores only hire people with disabilities?

It is a standard policy for Goodwill to hire the best-qualified people from the community at all levels and departments. The retail operation will hire many workforce development participants interested in the retail field to give them the experience they need to be successful. Donation Frequently Asked Questions

What items can I donate?

Clothing, shoes, books, computers, electronics, cooking accessories, furniture, jewelry, musical instruments, sporting equipment, pictures, art, tools and toys, linens and housewares. Goodwill is unable to use auto parts, building materials, hazardous materials or tires. See our list of what you can donate.

Do you pick up donations?

Scheduling a pickup with Goodwill is a fast and convenient way to give back! It’s FREE and it takes less than one minute to schedule a pick-up. Visit donate.goodwillaz.org or call 602.513.8444 to schedule your pick-up.

Do I get a tax-deductible receipt for my donations?

Yes, whenever you donate to Goodwill you will receive a receipt acknowledging the date that Goodwill received your donation. See our list of estimated donation values to see what your donation is worth.

How do I determine the value of my donation for tax purposes?

Our Estimated Donation Values list gives approximate values for what items sell for at Goodwill stores. Use these ranges as a general guide to assess the value you can claim on your tax return. Goodwill cannot assign a tax value for you. IRS regulations require taxpayers to place a value on items donated. The rules governing valuation, substantiation, record keeping and reporting can be quite complex, however. We therefore recommend downloading IRS Publication 526 and IRS Publication 561 from the IRS Website and/or consulting a tax advisor if your situation so warrants.

How does Goodwill use my donations?

Since 1947, Goodwill of Central Arizona has provided services in the community to “Put People to Work!” Our primary fundraising comes from the resale of donated items through Goodwill retail stores. We use that money to fund programs to help people improve their lives and the lives of their families, through the dignity of gainful employment.

What happens to the donations Goodwill can't use or sell?

Goodwill accepts all donations. We use a 5-point quality inspection process to determine whether or not the donated good is appropriate for resale in our stores or whether it should be sent through our clearance outlet and then our recycling / salvage system. Goodwill’s resale and recycling efforts keep more than 100 million pounds of items out of landfills every year. We were one of Arizona’s first recyclers. Good for the community, good for the Earth. Thank you for your generous donations.
