Summer Youth Work Programs for Local Youth
Youth in Maricopa County who are seeking employment opportunities for the Summer 2009, are invited to enroll in a summer program operated by the Maricopa County Workforce Connection (MWC) and Phoenix Workforce Connection (PWC).
In previous years, the City of Phoenix has operated the Summer Youth Work Experience Program (SYWEP) for City of Phoenix residents youth ages 18 and younger.
In 2009, the program will be operated through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA). Youth who are interested in participating must be deemed as WIA-eligible.
Since Goodwill is a current provider for WIA services for Maricopa County and the City of Phoenix, we will be operating the summer program, providing case management for youth and placing them at the appropriate worksites.
City of Phoenix Summer Youth Program (PWC)
The process of enrollment will be conducted using a lottery system to guarantee fairness and to help ensure proper placement of youth. With the lottery system, all youth submit their application to one of the recognized drop-off sites, such as Goodwill’s designated drop-off sites or any other partner agencies listed on the application.
The applications will be submitted to the City and the County for centralization and then, using the lottery system, the applications will be funneled to participating providers for enrollment. Any youth that does not provide all required documentation for eligibility will not be entered into the lottery. Currently Youth Services' WIA programs work with youth with disabilities, pregnant and parenting youth, youth offenders and homeless youth.
Please visit the City of Phoenix Website (listed below) to download an application or to find where you can pick up an application for the City of Phoenix Summer Program:

Youth are welcome to visit the Goodwill Career Center, 417 N. 16th St., Phoenix, fill out the application and submit it on-site.
In addition, the City of Phoenix will be providing a Summer Youth Career Exploration and Internship Program for industry-specific training and work experience. As with the main Summer Youth Program through the City of Phoenix, youth will gain work experience and will be required to meet eligibility requirements. Participating youth must be City of Phoenix residents and this program will also operate on a lottery system. The Summer Youth Career Exploration and Internship program will require youth to work in an industry-specific business, including Healthcare, or Advanced Manufacturing and youth will be required to attend a class offered through the local community college.
More information regarding this specific program is available on the City of Phoenix Website at http://phoenix.gov/PHXWIN/syceip.html.
