What Happens to Your Goodwill Donations?

Have you ever wondered what happens to your Goodwill donations? Whether you’re dropping off gently used clothing and household items or making a monetary donation, your donation is contributing to the greater good of our community. Let’s find out more.

What Happens to Your Goodwill Donations | Blog

Keeping our stores stocked with donations allows other community members to purchase these items at a discounted price.

We know that Arizonans have a choice of where to bring their used clothing, household goods and furniture. That’s why we’re grateful whenever you choose to donate your items to Goodwill. Your donations mean we are able to keep our shelves stocked with unique finds.

When you donate your gently used items to Goodwill, you’re giving new life to clothing and other items that would otherwise be thrown away. Plus, a fellow community member then gets the opportunity to purchase these items within their budget.

When you shop at Goodwill, the experience is far more personal than a traditional retail store. Every item has a story of the joy that it gave to its previous owner. Then that item gets to bring joy to someone new when it is purchased from our store. Imagine a child finding a fun new game to play. A mom finding back-to-school outfits for her kids. Or a little girl finding new interesting books to read over the summer.

Donated items receive new life when they arrive at Goodwill. We never turn down donations and will happily sort and sell just about anything you bring in (besides unsellable hazardous materials).

A clothing or household donation to Goodwill helps fight unemployment in our community.

When you donate or shop at Goodwill, you’re helping place Arizonans in jobs with hundreds of companies across the state each year through our no-cost career centers. At Goodwill, we are dedicated to ending poverty through the power of work. When someone receives a job thanks to the free resources at Goodwill, they are empowered to then strengthen their family and in turn, contribute to a stronger community.

Just by purchasing clothing or other household items at our stores, you’re giving back to these essential career services. Because of the generous donations we receive and the loyal customers who shop with us, we are able to continue offering these services at no cost to our citizens.

Anyone who is in need of assistance finding a job, whether it’s interview skills or creating a resume, Goodwill’s career services are ready to help. Many of our career center patrons go on to have very successful careers.

Goodwill diverts millions of pounds of material from Arizona landfills by reusing or recycling.

Because we don’t turn away any donations, sometimes we have items that have a hard time selling. Rather than throwing away items that we can’t sell, we are committed to reducing our waste by repurposing those items.

Any clothing or no-longer-needed items donated to Goodwill that can’t be sold are recycled or repurposed to avoid the landfill. These items are cut into rags for industrial use, or processed into soft fiber used for furniture, home insulation, car sound-proofing, and carpeting.

Even if your donation eventually gets recycled in this way, you know you’re still contributing to a sustainable community.

How a Monetary Donation Supports Goodwill

Donations are the lifeline of our organization and monetary donations are no exception. Without your generous contributions, our organization wouldn’t exist and we would no longer be able to help thousands of Arizonans find jobs through our no-cost career centers every year.

We like to think of monetary donations as investments in a person’s future. By filling out our donation form, you join our community of Goodwill supporters who back our mission of fighting unemployment.
