Decorating your House on a Budget

Home design is a fun creative hobby for expressing your personal style. It can also be a budget buster. When you see beautifully-designed reading nooks or light and bright master bedrooms in a magazine, you’re also seeing a lot of zeros in terms of what it costs to achieve those looks. Luckily, you can achieve your favorite home design style for a lot less by shopping at a thrift store like Goodwill. Even better, it’s way more fun.

The hunt for that unique dresser that you can refurbish is a thrilling endeavor. Need a new couch? You might just find one that needs a new cover. When you shop at Goodwill, you get to put your own spin on previously loved pieces. A lot of times we receive items with great bones that simply need a makeover. Use those magazine photos for inspiration and come to Goodwill with your creative juices going.

Let’s get inspired. Here are some items to look for at Goodwill when decorating your house on a budget.

Dining Chairs – Look for solid wood chairs that you can sand and paint. Add a pop of color with new cushions. For upholstered dining chairs, you can buy new slipcovers or reupholster on your own with a new fabric of your choice.

End Tables – It’s nice to have a side table next to your bed, but spending hundreds of dollars on each table is not so nice. Look for a matching pair, or consider mixing two unique tables for an eclectic look. Sand, paint them, and add shiny new hardware.

Floor Lamps – If you’re looking for a floor lamp for an office or bedroom, you’d be surprised at the designer lamps that we receive as donations.

Picture Frames – At Goodwill, you can find beautiful framed art or picture frames just waiting to be filled with family memories. If you find frame shapes that you like, consider adding a fresh coat of paint so they all match in color.

Dressers – We don’t just have dressers, we have dressers with character. Vintage and mid-century modern finds happen at Goodwill all the time. Look for unique craft details that you can highlight if you choose to refurbish.

Headboards – Sometimes you can find designer headboards for a bed that you can mount to a wall. Purchasing a complete bed set is often not necessary. If you already have a frame and a mattress, a headboard will complete the look for less.

Accessories – If you have a dresser or bookshelf that needs styling, you’ll find so many fun accessories at Goodwill. Salt and pepper shakers, vases, bowls, bookends, and more!

We promise you’ll have so much fun going on the hunt for the perfect pieces to style your home! When you shop at Goodwill, you can embrace your inner DIY crafter to achieve a beautifully designed home for a lot less. This goes for fashion too! Come check out what unexpected items you can find at a Goodwill location (or two) near you.
