How to Thrift Shop for Fall Clothes Featuring Stylist Jessi Russell

Fall fashion season is upon us! As a stylist, I love when the weather gets cooler, because instead of dressing for the function of staying cool in the hot weather, I can dress for my own creative expression. Soon we’ll be breaking out the jackets, jeans, scarves, and boots. The best place to shop for fall clothes? Goodwill, of course!

One of the great things about shopping at a thrift store is that you can find things that you wouldn’t normally find at a retail store. Wearing pieces that aren’t off-the-rack will make your original style stand out. I seem to get more compliments too because not everyone’s wearing it. It’s so fun to say, “Thanks, I got it at Goodwill!”

Your budget shouldn’t take a hit when you want to refresh your wardrobe for the new season. All you need is some inspiration and the motivation to shop for some fashionable gems.

Ready to start shopping? Here are my tips for how to thrift shop for the upcoming fall season.

Sweaters

Who doesn’t love a soft sweater? Fall clothes are so cozy. An oversized knit sweater looks great with jeans and boots. It’s also a staple for lounging at home on the weekends. Look for neutrals, browns, and olive green tones.

Boots

Tall boots under a midi skirt is my current go-to look for fall. Over-the-knee boots are also perfect for dressing up jeans. If you can score a pair at a thrift store, you’ll love them even more.

Blazers

Blazers are a great fall workplace staple, and they’re great for quickly dressing up an outfit. Pair a blazer with one of your summer dresses for a completely new look. I’m loving the classic prints.

Jackets

You’ll be surprised at the great designer jackets you can find at a thrift store. If you’ll be visiting the snow this winter, a puffy insulated jacket is a great option. Trench coats and leather jackets are also fun to wear in the fall. When shopping for jackets, look for style, comfort, and function.

Jeans

Wearing jeans in the summer in Arizona is not very much fun, but jeans in the fall are a must. Look for a comfy pair of dark jeans that you can tuck into boots. You can never have enough jeans in your wardrobe, and there are so many to choose from at Goodwill.

Head to Goodwill with a mental checklist of what you’re looking for. If you’re on the hunt for designer brands, don’t be afraid to shop off-size or venture into the men’s section. Layering is a big part of fall fashion. When it comes to wearing layers, you don’t always need to buy your true size. An oversized flannel? Perfect! Even if you don’t find designer tags, look for quality items. Many times, fabric and fit mean more than the name on the tag.

Soon enough it will be boot weather and I couldn’t be happier about it. I hope these tips inspire you to go on the hunt for fall clothes at a Goodwill location near you. Happy shopping!
