Recycled DIY Christmas Decoration Ideas

Decorating your home for the holidays can get expensive. Holiday decorations are not cheap, but you want your home to feel festive and cozy for the holidays. Check out these DIY Christmas decoration ideas for inside and outside your home brought to you by our staff at Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona.

DIY Snow Globes

Did you know you can make your own snow globes out of bottles or jars? Any jars you have around the house should work whether it’s a storage jar or an old jam jar. Mason jars with a large opening may be easier to fit your items inside. For the liquid inside the jar, glycerin is what makes the snow look like it’s falling and you may already have it in your cosmetic cabinet. Add figurines or other items and decorations to the jar.

Homemade Christmas Ornaments

Instead of buying Christmas tree ornaments, make your own! There are tons of ways to make an ornament, including the old-fashioned popsicle stick picture frame, adding a string loop to a small stuffed animal or good old-fashioned construction paper.

Use Lights or Twigs as a Centerpiece

Faux holiday garland can be pricey, but it’s not necessary to make your home look festive. Find natural stems in your yard or go on a walk around your neighborhood. Place a large bundle of stems or white Christmas lights in a clear glass vase you found at Goodwill for a pretty recycled centerpiece.

DIY Gift Tags & Last Year’s Wrapping Paper

Skip the store-bought gift tags and make your own. Use some cardstock paper and stamps to decorate gift tags and add a personal touch to your gifts. Don’t forget to save pretty ribbons and bags that you received last season. If it’s in good shape, no need to throw it out!

Stovetop Potpourri

Instead of buying candles or scented pinecones, you can make your own at home. Make a stovetop potpourri using citrus and warm spices like oranges and cinnamon sticks. Your house will smell like all the flavors of the holidays.
