Computer Skills Training 101

It’s no secret that PCs and laptops are a staple in business and most workplaces. That’s why computer know-how, experience using Microsoft Office programs, and internet navigation not only maximize employment potential but also simplify and streamline other areas of life. If you’re looking to increase your computer knowledge and to search for your next employment opportunity, Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona offers no-cost computer classes and certifications to help improve your competitiveness in the job market. Computer basics 101 provides instruction and review of how to use a computer. Here is a brief overview of the topics covered in the first training course.

Desktop & Laptop Navigation

If it’s been years since you have used a computer – one of the first questions you may have is how to start it up! In this course, you will investigate the functionality of both desktops and laptops, including where the power buttons live and using a mouse versus a trackpad, depending on the operating system you have. You will learn the names of the computer components (ex. monitor, computer case, keyboard) and what they do. The course will also dive into the important keyboard basics like the differences between regular keys, directional keys, special characters and when you need to use those functions. Also, Basics 101 will cover how to navigate the start menu, locate folders and files, and how to find and use the headphone jack, USB, and charging ports.

Internet & Email

Once you know the essentials of how to navigate a computer, the next portion of the course delves into email and internet functionality. The introductory overview of the internet explains types of browsers, how to manage tabs, search engines, and common domain names. With the ever-changing landscape of the internet – it’s important to learn how to stay safe when online. The class segues into the best practices to guard yourself against cyber-attacks, data phishing, and even how to set privacy settings on popular social media websites. Once you’re up-to-date on ways to defend personal data, you will practice email etiquette when drafting and responding to messages. You will learn the anatomy of any email, professional addressing and replying, as well as how to add, access, and store email attachments.

Word 101

Keeping track of to-do items, appointments, and other lists can be managed through Microsoft Office. This course topic lays the framework of how to operate Microsoft word, one of the many programs offered in the Office software suite. It explains how to locate recent files and export documents in various formats. One major skill takeaway is resume building through Word templates; computer basics covers how to properly format a resume from choosing a color scheme and design to adding headers and boarders. Lastly, the class will show you how to differentiate between ‘save’ and ‘save as’ to ensure your new resume is properly maintained for future use.

Computer Basics 101 is the first step in a three-part course that will give you the skills and knowledge needed to impress potential employers and secure stable employment. Once you have learned new techniques and brushed up on past experience, your job search will become that much easier! Ready to enroll?
