Tips for Job Fair Success

Local job fairs are a great way to connect with companies, network, and advance your career. These events are typically fast-paced and draw the crowd, so it’s important to be equipped with go-to strategies to impress potential employers quickly. From resume building to style tips – there are many ways to ensure that you are prepared to leave a positive and lasting impression and land a job that is a great fit for you.

Resumes and More

Before attending a hiring event, make sure that your resume is relevant, informative, and covers the scope of your career goals, interests, and occupational skills. Show up prepared with several copies, and stand out by presenting your resume in a simple, colored folder. Don’t forget to bring updated business cards which outline your contact information and portfolio links, if applicable. Whether you need to create your first resume or need advice on revamping your cover letter or business cards, our Goodwill Career Centers are an excellent resource to assist you in the process.

Expand Your Horizons

Job fairs present an excellent opportunity to network with career professionals that are in line with your current position or future aspirations. They offer you the chance to branch out, even if you are looking to connect with a specific industry or company. Representatives are there to answer questions about their company, provide insight into the field, and attract the best-suited job seeker. Going to an event with an open mind not only opens the door for a new career pathway, but can also increase your overall awareness by learning about different industries and employment trends.

Research and Rehearse

Many employers at job fairs are prepared to interview, drug test, and even hire on the spot. If youare in the market for a gig that you can land that day, make sure to prepare as if you already have a scheduled interview. Research the company, take notes and practice your elevator pitch the day prior. It is also beneficial to have follow up questions in mind, to demonstrate your interest in that company. The competition during career events can seem intimidating, but if you are well-prepared, that will be apparent to employers and increase your chances of moving to the next steps.

Think Neutral

When preparing a winning outfit, it is best to appear professional and polished. A rule to remember is that neutrals are always a great option – you want employers to remember you, not your outfit. Forgo bright colors and loud patterns – and also leave excess jewelry and flashy shoes at home. Muted tones such as white, tan, navy and grey are suitable choices for professional attire. When in doubt, a structured, collared blouse or shirt and black slacks work perfectly for both men and women. Add a touch of personality without going over-the-top with a unique tie, pocket square, or classic item like a necklace or handbag.
