A temporary part-time job is a great way to boost your income during a certain season or time of year. You might already have a job and are looking to fill your off hours with more work. Or perhaps you aren’t working right now, but want to get back to work.
Beyond the added income, a temporary part-time job can be an opportunity to expand your network and practice new skills. Some temp jobs may even lead to more permanent work in some cases, which can be a great opportunity for those who end up thriving in their new position.
If you think a temporary part-time job is right for you, here are some steps to take to ensure you land the position you want.
- Create a Resume
Your resume should be clear, compelling and free of spelling and grammatical errors. If you need assistance creating a resume that sells, check out one of Goodwill’s no-cost career centers. A helpful advisor will help you format and proofread your resume to ensure you’re putting your best foot forward.
- Brush up on Job Skills
If you feel like you may be a little rusty with certain job skills, doing a refresher course is not a bad idea. Goodwill offers no cost computer skills training courses that will teach you programs like Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint and the basics of different computer operating systems.
- Practice Interviewing
The interview is an important part of the job application process. Practicing is important so you feel prepared and confident. Look up common interview questions and write down what you would say. Then practice saying your answers out loud. Additionally, practicing a handshake and eye contact is also a good idea.
- Apply for Jobs
Once you’re ready to start applying, head to a hiring event or apply to open positions online. You may even stop in certain locations that you’re particularly interested in. Have your resume ready and ask to speak to the manager about current open positions.
- Follow Up
After you’ve applied, don’t forget to follow up. Send a thank you note via snail mail or email to thank the person who interviewed you and express your excitement for the position.
