The Truth About Your Goodwill Donations: Where They Go & Why It Matters

Let’s Clear the Air: What Really Happens When You Donate to Goodwill

You might’ve heard a few things about Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona – maybe even wondered what really happens to your donations when you drop them off. From threads to group chats, there’s a lot of conversation out there.

We’re here to tell you the real story. No drama. Just facts.

At Goodwill, our purpose is simple but powerful: to empower individuals, strengthen families, and build stronger communities. This mission drives everything we do. And when you donate to Goodwill, you’re not just giving your pre-loved items a second chance; you’re helping us make that mission possible.

More Than Just a Donation: You’re Fueling a Mission

Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which means the proceeds from your donations go back into the community.

We work every day to end poverty through the power of work. That means providing people with the tools, resources, and support to build sustainable careers and brighter futures. A few of the programs you help fund when you donate include:

  • My Career Advisor: Free tools for job seekers, from resume help to mock interviews and skill-building training.
  • The Excel Center: A tuition-free charter high school for adults 18 and older to earn their high school diploma.
  • Spark Community Schools: Free microschools with small class sizes and high-impact learning environments for Arizona students.

When you support Goodwill, you’re not just donating things, you’re investing in a person’s future.

Donations That Do More: Our Commitment to Sustainability

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people: In the U.S., 85% of textile waste is disposed of in landfills or incinerated, while only 15% of end-of-use textiles are recovered.

At Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona, we’re dedicated to finding innovative, sustainable solutions for your donations. Each year, we collect and divert millions of pounds of material from local landfills. We believe in giving items a second chance, so even if something doesn’t sell in our stores, we work hard to keep materials out of the waste stream and in circulation for longer.

Here’s what happens behind the scenes:

  1. First stop: Donations are collected at our stores. Items that are in good condition are priced and placed in our stores.
  2. At our stores, customers have a six-week opportunity to purchase items. During their six-week rotation, multiple discounts are offered to our customers.
  3. Next up: The Bins. If the donations haven’t sold in our stores, they’re moved to our clearance centers (also known as “The Bins”) and sold by the pound, giving shoppers one more chance to score one-of-a-kind items.
  4. End of the line: Down-cycling and Recycling. At Goodwill, we prioritize reuse and believe in extending the life of donations. When reuse isn’t possible through our stores, we find creative ways to recycle donations by working with partners to transform them into new items.

No Fees. No Hidden Costs. Just Easy Giving.

Let’s debunk another common myth: you have to pay to donate to Goodwill.

It’s always free to donate to Goodwill. No drop-off costs. No fine print.

And with convenient donation centers right in your neighborhood, giving back is easy, quick, and close to home.

So… Why Do We Sell the Items You Donate?

We get it, people wonder: If you got it for free, why not give it away for free?

While your donation might come at no cost, its value goes a long way. Your donations support free career development, education, and job training programs for the community. These programs remove barriers to employment, helping individuals achieve meaningful employment and careers that provide stability for themselves and their families.

Your items are more than just stuff – they’re a stepping stone for someone else’s future.

There’s a Lot of Misinformation Out There

From viral posts to offhanded comments, there are plenty of misconceptions about Goodwill: about wages, about how we operate, and about where your donations actually go.

We can’t speak for every Goodwill location in the country. But here at Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona, we’re committed to authenticity, community, and transparency. We support and respect other locations, but we also want you to know the facts about us.

The Bottom Line: Doing Good Is Easier Than You Think
The next time you’re clearing out a closet or passing by one of our donation centers, know this: your donation matters.

  • Your donation keeps usable items out of landfills.
  • Your donation creates real opportunities for your local community.
  • Your donation helps end poverty through the power of work.

That’s a whole lot of good from one simple act.
