Response to Think Before You Donate

Response to the “Think Before You Donate” E-mail

You may have seen this e-mail in circulation: it contains a variation of the message “Think Before You Donate” and warns against giving to certain nonprofits, including Goodwill.

We believe it’s very important to learn as much as you can about any organization you’re thinking about supporting. We also believe it’s our responsibility to ensure you have the most accurate information about us, which is why we want to address the content of this particular email.

Mark Curran is not the CEO and owner of Goodwill. To our knowledge, Mark Curran has never owned Goodwill nor worked for Goodwill in any capacity. We don’t know how his name came to be associated with our organization.

Goodwill of Central Arizona is a nonprofit organization, and 90 cents of every dollar goes toward our mission: Fighting Unemployment in Arizona. Our sole purpose is to fight unemployment in Arizona and help anyone looking for a job. We provide no-cost job preparation services and connections to anyone in Arizona looking for a job at career centers in the Phoenix, Prescott and Yuma areas.

When items are donated to Goodwill, they are resold in our retail stores to help raise money to operate our mission services and career centers. 90 cents of every dollar earned through our retail efforts, grants, and other fund-raising initiatives goes toward services that fight unemployment in our state. We placed more than 42,000 Arizonans in their quest for employment in 2015, with hundreds of local employers spanning a variety of industries.

Goodwill of Central Arizona is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and one of 165 community-based Goodwills in the U.S. and Canada today. Each Goodwill organization operates independently and is governed by its own volunteer board of directors. We encourage you to view our audited financial information and IRS 990 form, and to access additional information about our organization on GuideStar, an online nonprofit database that has certified Goodwill of Central Arizona with the GuideStar Exchange Seal for our commitment to transparency.

We appreciate your interest in Goodwill of Central Arizona, and encourage you to share this information with your contacts. Thank you for your goodwill.
